Kalbata & Mixmonster went into their home studio over two years ago with the purpose of recording a fully analogue reggae album in the spirit of the late King Tubby and the early dancehall era of the late 70's and early 80's. A 16-track tape machine and an old analogueanal mixing desk were their main instruments, with musicians playing live throughout the whole album. They insisted on not using any computers in the process of making the tracks and were determined to create new music combining elements from genres such as bass music, psychedelic rock, funk and of course reggae.
A year after making these instrumental tracks they travelled to Kingston, Jamaica and started tracking down their favorite singers and MC's from days gone by. Artists, which, in their heyday, ruled the Jamaican ghettos, making a bold transition from traditional roots music to what is now known as Jamaican dancehall. Most of these artists were overlooked internationally as they narrowly missed the 70's golden age of 'Roots Rock Reggae' and were too ahead of their game to enjoy the huge success of contemporary dancehall. After locating the artists in Kingston, Kalbata & Mixmonster brought them into the studio one by one, trying to revive the vintage Kingston sound in a modern studio environment.
The result was astounding. The artists, some of which are still active and some completely not, rose to the challenge and laid down silky smooth lyrics as well as hard-edged rhymes, reviving that famous Kingston vibe as if it was 1979.
The result is 'Congo Beat The Drum', a 10-track album encapsulating the vision of these two contemporary producers using vintage production techniques together with a quality choice of singers from Jamaica's glorious musical past.
Kalbata (Ariel Tagar) is an electronic music producer who previously released on labels such as Soul Jazz, Greenmoney and Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings. He is globally known for his dub, techno and bass music productions.
Mixmonster (Uri Wertheim) is the man behind funk band 'The Apples' (Widely known for their version of Rage Against The Machine's 'Killing In The Name Of'), as well as a member of cut-n-paste duo Radiotrip. He is also a producer and sound engineer specialising in analogue and tape recordings.
